According to claimsjournal.com, Philadelphia resident Joseph Francis Brooks was recently given a five-year suspended sentence with 18 months probation after pleading guilty to charges of insurance fraud.
The charges stemmed from a 2002 incident when Brooks and Pierre Lamont Taylor, a UPS employee and Brooks’ cousin, staged a robbery so that Taylor could get workers’ compensation benefits as a result of being shot in the leg during the “robbery”. Yes, Brooks actually shot Taylor. The incident took place while the duo lived in Baltimore.
As a result of the alleged work injury, UPS’ workers’ comp insurer Liberty Mutual paid Taylor a lump sum of $250,000 in benefits, who then shared the loot with his cooperative cousin.
A former friend of Taylor’s reported the fraud to Liberty Mutual, and Taylor confessed claiming they got the idea from a television show. “D’oh!” indeed.
